International Development Studies (IDS) is an interdisciplinary field of study. IDS integrates courses from a variety of both social and natural sciences. The core foundation of IDS, however, consists of social sciences, especially Economics, International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, and Gender Studies.
The M. Phil. degree program in International Development Studies focuses on the growing linkages between national and international development processes in the globalized world. More specifically, this 2-year rigorous degree program adopts an interdisciplinary approach to study the way these linkages and the processes of change are unfolding in the developing countries. The aim of this program is to prepare graduates for higher studies and/or a successful career in national and international organizations.Although graduates with a social science background shall feel a natural affinity with this program of study and instantly find it rewarding in terms of their intellectual and professional growth, fresh graduates and mid-career professionals who have a background in other disciplines, such as humanities and basic sciences, and are working in the development sector, civil society groups, and national and international organizations, shall find it quite enriching in terms of their capability to comprehend and cope with complex development issues around them. Both fresh graduates and mid-career professionals with and without a social science background shall appreciate the flexibility of this degree program which is designed to satisfy their diverse intellectual and professional needs.Admission Criteria
The minimum admission criteria include:16-year of education from a recognized university in Development Studies, Economics, International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Gender Studies, Management Science, Pakistan Studies, or in a related field;
2.5 CGPA or second division; and
GAT-General Test with a minimum score of 50 is required at the time of admission.The final decision to grant admission shall be based on academic record, admission test and interview.Program Requirements
An M. Phil. degree shall be awarded on the completion of a total of 36 credit hours, including a minimum of 27 credit hours of course work. An M. Phil. candidate shall be required to write a thesis of 9 credit hours. The minimum 27 credit hours of course work includes three compulsory courses and 6 optional courses. The Department may allow M. Phil students to take one course in other MS/M. Phil. programs in social and management sciences. The prior approval of the Department is mandatory for taking a course in other programs. Each M. Phil. course is of 3 credit hours. M. Phil. candidates without an adequate background in the core foundation of International Development Studies may be required to complete remedial courses. The admission committee of the Department will determine the need of a student for remedial course work. A brief roadmap of the M. Phil. program is provided below for the guidance of students.
